Journal Entry No. 003 – “Tokyo Neat”
Share
November 13th – Tokyo, Japan. Where silence speaks louder than hangovers.
Tokyo is a city that hums at the frequency of caffeine and precision. Everything clicks. Everything moves. Everything works. Which is exactly why I stood out like a whiskey-soaked thumb the moment I stumbled into Bar Yasuda, four hours late, one shoe missing, and asking for a drink “with a soul.”
The bartender, a man who could slice diamonds with his gaze, said nothing. Just poured me a glass of something gold and unmarked. No label. No logo. Just reverence in liquid form.
I took a sip and saw the face of God. He was disappointed in me. But the whiskey forgave it.
The Silent Bar and the Mistaken Identity
The place was quieter than a Buddhist monastery during finals week. No music. No talking. Just the sound of polished glass on lacquered wood and the occasional ice cube shifting like tectonic plates.
So naturally, I decided to perform stand-up comedy.
It was a mistake. I’d misread the situation. Thought the stillness was a setup. Turns out, it was the main attraction.
Midway through my routine about accidentally mistaking wasabi for toothpaste (true story), a woman in the corner politely whispered: “Please stop.”
I sat back down. The bartender poured me another.
Enter the Stranger (or Possibly Toshiro Mifune)
Now I won’t say for certain it was Toshiro Mifune sitting two stools over. But the man bore a striking resemblance, down to the stern brow and a voice like low thunder.
He didn’t speak until the fourth pour. Then he leaned over and muttered:
“You drink like a samurai with no master. Lost. But dangerous.”
I thanked him. He didn’t say another word. Just vanished into the Tokyo rain.
Could’ve been a ghost. Could’ve been my hangover learning Japanese.

Final Thought from the Idiot
I came to Tokyo looking for a story. What I got was a lesson in restraint, a bottle that spoke more than I ever could, and a stern ghost who may or may not have challenged me to a duel with chopsticks.
Say what you want about whiskey—it travels well. But in Japan, it listens better than it speaks.
Until the next round,
