Men's Mental Health: You Aren't Alone and You Don't Have to Act Like You Are

Men's Mental Health: You Aren't Alone and You Don't Have to Act Like You Are

Let’s be honest.

Most of us were raised to “man up,” “push through,” and “deal with it.” Talking about mental health? That wasn’t exactly part of the playbook.

But here’s the truth: that mindset is costing too many men too much.

We get it. At Overholt Supply Co., we’re all about grit, hard work, and being the kind of man people can count on. But even the toughest guys need a moment. A space to exhale. Someone who’ll say, “Yeah, man—I’ve been there too.”

This post is that space.

We Don’t Talk About It Enough

Men’s mental health isn’t some fringe issue. It’s real, and it’s affecting guys from all walks of life—veterans, dads, business owners, mechanics, teachers, bartenders, and brothers alike.

  • 1 in 5 men will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime.

  • Men die by suicide nearly 4x more often than women.

  • And yet… we’re the least likely to ask for help.

Why?

Because we’ve been taught that reaching out makes us weak. That admitting we’re struggling somehow means we’re broken.

But strength isn’t staying silent. Strength is knowing when to speak up.

You Don’t Have to “Fix It” Alone

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You don’t have to suffer in silence.
And you damn sure don’t have to walk through the dark on your own.

I know that from experience. Many of you know I’m a veteran, and like many others, I carried years of unresolved trauma before I realized what it was doing to me. I got help. I did the work. And I’m better for it.

That’s why we created Overholt Supply Co. to be more than just a store.

Yes, we carry handmade goods, beard oils, leather gear, whiskey candles, and rugged shirts—but more than that, this is a place where men can show up and just be real.

We’ve had guys come in, grab a coffee or pour a whiskey, and talk life. No shame. No judgment. Just connection.

Here's What We Want You to Know

  • It’s okay to not be okay.

  • It’s not okay to stay there.

  • You are not alone. And you are not weak for asking for help.

Whether it’s a conversation with a buddy, a talk with your doctor, a visit to a therapist, or a phone call to the VA or a mental health hotline—do it.

There are resources out there:

  • Veterans: The VA has solid programs, and every VA hospital has a Patient Advocate if you feel unheard.

  • Civilians: Local counselors, hotlines, and peer groups are more accessible than ever. Apps like BetterHelp, Headspace, and Calm are game-changers too.

Overholt Supply Co. Is Here for the Long Haul

We’re not therapists. We’re just guys who know that sometimes, all it takes is a space to talk, laugh, vent, or even just sit.

If you’re local to Castroville, swing by.
Grab a seat. Share a story. Or don’t. We’ll still be here.

If you’re not nearby, send us a message. We may not have all the answers, but we’re always ready to listen—and sometimes, that’s the first step.

Stay steady. Stay strong. And keep showing up.
